Method of Cooking Rice in a Rice Cooker
Step 1:- Measuring the quantity of rice : First of all, you need to measure the quantity of rice to be cooked and then put it in your best buy rice cooker or a pot. For the measurement, you can use a cup. A few rice cooker models come with a pot or a bowl while others do not have them. If your model has a bowl, you can put the rice in it otherwise, you can directly put it in the rice cooker. Mostly, the manufacturer from whom you shall purchase the appliance will provide a measuring cup or a scoop along with the rice cooker.
This cup or scoop can fit about 3/4th or 180 ml. Even if you have not been provided with a measuring cup, you can use an ordinary cup. In the case of an ordinary cup, one cup or rice (uncooked) should produce about 1 ½ cups to three cups of rice (cooked). The quantity produced after cooking depends upon the quality of rice. Make sure that you leave enough space for the rice to expand during being cooked. Otherwise, the rice would spill over.
Step 2:- Rinse the rice if you feel it is necessary : Mostly, people prefer to rinse the rice before cooking it just because there may be pesticides, chemicals, contaminants, or herbicides present in the rice, and by rinsing all of these can be removed. Also, if the rice has been produced at a place with less modern milling technologies then, broken grains might be present that would release excess starch into the rice thus, it needs to be rinsed off so that clumping of the rice can be prevented. So, if you want to rinse the rice, what you can do is, just pour water into the bowl filled with rice, keep stirring, and stop when the rice gets completely submerged. Now, drain the water. For draining, you can tilt the bowl.
When you will tilt the bowl, the water along with rice would come, just keep catching the falling rice while letting the water drain. You can repeat the process of rinsing the rice until you feel that after filling the bowl with water, the water looks comparatively clearer than before. If your rice cooker review has a non-stick bowl, it is better to do the rinsing part in any other bowl because the non-stick one can get damaged and replacement of the non-stick bowl will be very expensive.
Step3:- Measuring the water: Your manufacturer shall most probably recommend cold water to be added and the amount of water that needs to be added depends upon the quality of the rice being cooked and how moist you prefer your rice to be. Often, there are marks on the inside of the rice cooker to indicate how much water has to be added.
Alternatively, you can also look for the instructions on the packaging of the rice. However, you can go through the following instructions and add water to your rice accordingly
- White long grain: In this kind of rice if you have taken 1 cup of rice then, 1 ¾ cups of water is enough.
- White medium grain: If this is the quality of rice that you are using then, 1 ½ cup of water for 1 cup of rice will be enough.
- White short grain: For this, if you have taken 1 cup of rice then, 1 ¼ cups of water shall be enough.
- Brown long grain: 2 ¼ cups of water for 1 cup of rice should be all for this quality of rice.
- Parboiled: In the case of this kind of rice, 2 cups of water for 1 cup of rice will be enough.
- Indian style rice: These include Basmati, Jasmine, etc. and require less water because rice is preferred to be dry. So for such dry rice, only 1 ½ cups of water should be added if you have taken it for suppose, 1 cup of rice and if you have already rinsed the rice then, 1 cup of water for 1 cup of rice needs to be added.
Step 4:- Soak the rice for some time : This step is not necessary but you can do this to reduce the cooking time. If you soak the rice before cooking, the rice cooked will be sticky. For soaking, you can use the amount of water measured earlier at room temperature. Also, you can use the same water for cooking later on.
Step 5:- Adding flavors : Before beginning to cook in your japanese rice cookers, you can add flavorings to the water itself so that the aroma can be absorbed by the rice during cooking. You can also add some salt at this time to add flavor. Apart from these, you can also add butter or oil. If the rice that you are making is of the Indian style then, you can add a few cardamom seeds or a bay leaf.
Step 6:– Pushing the rice seeds and grains under the water : If there is any rice that is stuck on the sides of the pot, use a wooden or plastic utensil to move it back into the water. Make sure that the water does not spill over the edges while if the water has spilled, you can use a cloth to wipe it off. Do not stir the rice much when it is under the water as it shall release much starch and the cooked rice would become stickier.
Step 7:- Checking for special options in your small rice cooker : A simple rice cooker shall only have an off and an on the switch while the one with advanced features shall have different settings for brown and white rice individually. In some models of the rice cooker, there is even an option where you can delay the cooking until a specified time period has passed. If you are working with basic settings then, you would not face any problem but that does not mean you do not try other settings and options.
Step 8:- Cooking the rice : Place the pot of the rice cooker back in it and close with the lid. Then, plug the cooker into the socket and switch it on. When the rice is cooked, the switch will click as in the case of a toaster. Mostly, the rice stays warm until the cooker is unplugged. It is better not to open the lid because the cooking of the rice depends on the steam inside it and if you will open the lid at this time, you shall get improperly cooked rice. When the temperature inside your small rice cooker exceeds that of water’s boiling point, the appliance shall automatically turn off.
Step 9:- Serving : Once you see that there is no water left inside the cooker, the rice is ready to eat. You can use a utensil or a fork to stir the rice, it will break clumps and release steam. This is important so that the rice does not get overcooked. Your rice is ready and you can serve it now.
